ADVICE FOR BUYING A NEW CAR

Buying a new car is the safest way of buying as you get the maximum protection of the law.

Due to the considerable amount of ‘Bad press’ the car manufacturers have had with Government ‘Price Fixing Reports’ in Britain during 1999 and earlier this year, it is a better time now than ever before to go hunting for a new car bargain.

‘Everything in life is negotiable’ so remember that the price you see is the price to negotiate down from.

When buying a new car it is often better to buy it without trading your older car in. This is because there is only ‘so much money in the pot ‘ that the car dealer has to negotiate with. If you want the price of your new car to fall then you can expect the ‘Trade in’ value of your own to fall also. Selling your old car privately will therefore generally get you a better price and give you a stronger position to negotiate from when buying a new car.

Draw up a list of variables to negotiate with and bring them into the price conversation with your new car dealer when you need an extra lever to negotiate with. Things such as type of model, metallic paint, 0% finance, free insurance or servicing for a year, free full tank of petrol, free foot mats, free mud-flaps, free car licence etc. are all things that may have value to you that you will have to buy as they are not included in the price.

Analysing the budget you have consider how much you are going to put down and how much you are realistically going to be able to afford in monthly repayments. Consider doing your budget for 1-3 year pay-back periods. Consider if 0% finance is available over the whole term of repayment.

The Law States:-

When you buy a car from a dealer the law says that it must be:

A) Of satisfactory quality - it must meet the standard that a reasonable person would regard as acceptable, bearing in mind the way it was described, how much it cost and any other relevant circumstances. This covers for example, the appearance and finish of the car, its safety and its durability. The car must be free from defects, except those pointed out to you by the seller.

B)Reasonably fit for any normal purpose - it should get you from A to B- and for any other purpose that you specify to the seller -for example, towing a caravan.

C) As described - a car said to have 'one careful lady owner' shouldn't turn out to have three previous owners, all males under 22.

These rights are not affected by any mechanical breakdown insurance (often sold by dealers if the manufacturer's warranty has run out), guarantee or warranty giving additional protection. A dealer is not liable for any faults that an independent inspection should have uncovered. It's a good idea to get a description of the vehicle's condition from the dealer. Ask whether there is a pre-inspection checklist.
