Go back to the seller immediately and explain the problem. Tell them what you want them to do about it.
If you cannot get satisfaction, get sound, preferably legal advice.

DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Authority)
The DVLA will tell you the legal last owner of a car. It was established in April 1990 as an executive agency of the former Department of Transport [DOT].
